Generate an image

An agent can generate an image and show it to you in the conversation: a concept, an icon, a reference texture. This page says what each generator needs, where the file goes and what gets in the way. For Discover thumbnails, use the Studio instead.

Generator What you need Reference images What is used up
ChatGPT The OpenAI · Codex gateway turned on and your connected account 4 Your subscription’s quota
Gemini The Google · Gemini gateway turned on and the Clé Gemini API pour les images (Gemini API key for images) in Paramètres › Comptes IA (Settings › AI accounts) 4 The billing of this key, separate from the CLI account
Grok The xAI · Grok gateway turned on and the Clé API xAI (xAI API key) in Paramètres › Comptes IA None Your xAI account

  1. Switch the conversation to Agent mode. Ask and Plan modes do not generate anything.
  2. Describe the image. The Image shortcut in the input area names the tool in your request when the agent has it.
  3. If needed, specify the generator, the model, the format (1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2 or 2:3) and the project images that must stay recognisable.

If you do not name a generator, the agent uses the one that goes with its engine: Gemini on Gemini, Grok on Grok, ChatGPT in all other cases. On Claude Code, for example, you therefore need the OpenAI · Codex gateway, or you need to name another generator.

Each call produces a single image and goes out without confirmation. Read-only profiles do not generate images.

The image is saved in the project’s Pilot/Generated/<task id>/, as PNG, JPEG or WebP, without overwriting any file. Under the image:

  • Ouvrir dans Pilot (Open in Pilot) shows it in a tab;
  • Ouvrir le dossier (Open folder) opens its location.

It also appears in Assets. See Where your files are.

If saving fails, the image stays in the conversation and a message tells you so. Deleting the conversation does not delete the file from the project. If you move or delete this file, the conversation can no longer display it.

  • Size. An image larger than 16 MB is refused.
  • Format. Gemini applies the requested format directly. For ChatGPT and Grok, it is an instruction, and the result may differ.
  • References. Grok receives none: choose another generator or remove them. In a conversation, the agent passes on 4 at most.
  • Availability on ChatGPT. Generation depends on your version of Codex and on your account. Without it, the message “Codex n’a produit aucun fichier image” (Codex produced no image file) appears.
  • Gemini engine. A conversation on Gemini refuses attached images, and the agent cannot see the images produced in it. Gemini generation itself works with its API key.
  • Uncertain result. If the response is interrupted, the service may have accepted the request and billed it. Only run it again after checking.
